When the world’s newest rainforest opened in March of 1993 at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, visitors had to use their imaginations to visualize how the acre-size rainforest would actually fill out its 10-story glass pyramid. Not so today! In just a few years, the Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid has formed a complete 55-foot tall canopy of tropical foliage, which blocks out much of the blazing Texas sun. The Pyramid has indeed become a verdant jungle full of Tarzan-type air-root vines, vibrant flowers and luscious fruit such as bananas and papaya. Indeed, the horticulture team led by Moody Gardens’ nationally renowned Gary Outenreath has its hands full controlling the growth, which produces three truck-loads of trimmings every week of the summer.

Chaffee Zoological Gardens is home to the world’s first computerized Reptile House. Environment chambers inside our Reptile House control temperature, humidity, and light cycles to create an environment that is as close to each species’ natural habitat as possible. Since the building opened in 1979, the zoo has had considerable success in both maintaining and breeding reptiles and amphibians in captivity. Reproductive research is being conducted on several endangered species in an effort to enhance captive propagation. The first captive reproduction of Rattleless Rattlesnakes occurred here in 1980, and the Madagascar Ground Boas were first born here in 1985. The newest addition to the zoo is the South American Tropical Rain Forest Exhibit. The exhibit is a unique structure which covers 20,000 sq. ft. and is completely enclosed by a fine mesh screen suspended from towering poles which soar create a free flowing and natural environment. The rain forest contains plants and animal species found primarily in South American regions. There is a breathtaking array of flowering plants as well as vibrantly colored birds that are flying freely for the visitor to observe and enjoy. The exhibit is not only a beautiful addition to the zoo but is a source of education and information on the destruction of the world’s rain forests and how the conservation of these very unique ecosystems is important to man and his future.

Cranes are a family of birds that have long been revered by people living near them. In Japan, the cranes are honored as symbols of long life and a happy marriage. In Viet Nam, cranes are believed to carry the souls of the dead to heaven. In North America, Africa, and Australia, native inhabitants have incorporated the crane’s graceful movements into their own dances and regard cranes as auspicious symbols. Cranes have inhabited this earth for the last 34 to 50 million years. Although cranes enjoy a widespread existence (they live on five of the seven continents), many populations are declining due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting. Seven of the species are currently designated as endangered and others are candidates for listing. It was against this backdrop that ICF was founded in 1973 to become the world’s center for the study and preservation of cranes.

Step through the gates of Folsom Children’s Zoo and Botanical Gardens and enter the most enchanting spot in Lincoln. An oasis of natural splendor near downtown, our Zoo holds magic for young and old alike. There is magic in the happy sounds of toddlers beholding the seals, the wallabies and emus, the baby camel, the howler monkeys and even the hissing cockroaches. There is a magic in the eager eyes of preschoolers listening to Stella the Storyteller read their favorite animal stories. There is magic in the earnest expression of a six-year-old boy as he explains to his dad that spectacled bears get their name from the markings around their eyes. There is magic in the growing confidence of a Zoo Crew teen as she introduces a bunny or a snake to visitors gathered at the Critter Encounter Area. Built on a small scale, with exhibits easily viewed by youngsters, Folsom Children’s Zoo and Botanical Gardens has been captivating the hearts and imaginations of our city’s youngest citizens and their families since it opened in 1965.

The North Carolina Zoological Park, with more than 500 acres in its African and North American continental regions, is a place of wonder and discovery. It is the country’s largest and finest walk-through natural habitat zoo. It was the first zoo designed from its inception as a natural-habitat zoo, which means that the animals and plants in its exhibits are seen in settings that closely resemble the habitats in which they would live in the wild. Its 37-acre African Plains exhibit alone is as large as many entire zoos. Sited on hilly, wooded terrain in the ancient Uwharrie Mountains of central North Carolina, the Zoo has approximately five miles of trails in its two continental regions. Among the Zoo’s more popular animal attractions are its polar bears, seals, sea lions, seabirds, river otters, bison, elk, alligators, elephants, rhinoceros, chimpanzees, baboons, gorillas, giraffes, zebras, ostriches and tropical birds. There are dozens of other species as well.

Animals from around the world are at home in this award-winning zoo, from the black rhinos of the Africa Savanna to the toucans of Amazon Flooded Forest. The zoo’s most famous resident is Packy, the largest Asian elephant in the U.S. But the zoo also highlights the wonders of species found closer to home. The Great Northwest, the zoo’s most ambitious exhibit, takes visitors from the heights of Cascade Crest, where mountain goats amble over rocks, through Eagle Canyon, where bald eagles and salmon co-exist, and on to Trillium Creek Family Farm, where visitors can pet heritage goats and sheep. The northwest journey ends at the Pacific shores of Steller Cove, home to sea lions, elephant seals, and sea otters. No visit would be complete without a four-mile round-trip train excursion to Washington Park, where passengers can enjoy the International Rose Test Garden before returning to the zoo. Known for its education programs, animal enrichment activities, and conservation efforts, the Oregon Zoo is working to save native species like endangered California condors, Oregon silverspot butterflies, and western pond turtles.

“We will inspire people to live in ways that promote the well-being of the natural world. We will achieve excellence in ecosystem exhibition, education, and conservation; we will be a principal attraction for residents and visitors.” The Phoenix Zoo dates its origin back to 1961 when Robert Maytag founded the Arizona Zoological Society. It took Mr. Maytag and his successors (Mr. Maytag died suddenly in 1962) 18 months to complete the first phase and The Phoenix Zoo opened in November, 1962. Located on 125 acres in Papago Park, The Phoenix Zoo was an Arizona Game and Fish Department fish hatchery before becoming a zoo in 1962. In the next five years, the Phoenix Zoo’s priorities will be the Forest of Uco (spectacled bear) exhibit, expansion of the Children’s Trail Farm, new Arabian oryx habitat, and expansion of the Arizona Trail. These state-of-the-art immersion exhibits will be unlike anything you have ever experienced at the Phoenix Zoo.

While Providence committed itself to establishing a “zoological garden” within the city before the Civil War, it wasn’t until the war ended in 1865 that the idea took final form. In 1871, plans were under way to make the recently-acquired Field’s Point section into a new city park when Betsey Williams, a relative of Rhode Island’s founder, Roger Williams, died. In her will, she left 103 acres of farm and swamp land to Providence for use as a park. The city accepted her bequest and opened Roger Williams Park, and its zoo, on June 9, 1872. Over the years, Providence greatly enlarged the park through donations of land from various sources. In the 1890′s, many zoo and park buildings were erected, including the Menagerie, Barn, Museum, Casino and Boathouse. Zoo exhibits were scattered over the park’s 440 acres, presenting problems with feeding, maintenance, and security. In 1979, the zoo was consolidated on its present site and modernized, gaining it a reputation as a world-renowned wild animal park as well as a Rhode Island institution.

Limestone cliffs surround the naturalistic enclosures and make dramatic backdrops for many of the animal habitats. The beginning was modest with only a few animals – a llama, two sheep, a goat, a turkey and a pair of spider monkeys – but the potential was there in an incredibly beautiful location. The Zoo grew, always emphasizing quality rather than quantity, and soon became one of the most popular attractions in the City of Santa Barbara. Building the Zoo was a community effort. Masses of volunteers dedicated their time while local businesses contributed materials and supplies for everything from pathways to paperwork. Many of the original volunteers and contributors are still very much involved with the Zoo today. Also during the decade of the 70′s, landscaping material, much of it donated, continued to be added to the park and zoo areas. Beautiful gardens were emerging. The Zoo took on a tropical atmosphere, highlighting some magnificent specimen plantings, especially palm trees. The entire lower end of the park had been marshy and only one lone eucalyptus tree grew there when the Zoo was opened. Now visitors wind their way through coral trees, jacarandas, silk trees, bananas and giant bird of paradise. Plantings in and around exhibits compliment the animals.

In operation since 1907, The Sequoia Park Zoo has long been considered one of the most important cultural facilities in the area. The Zoo is committed to providing a high quality facility that offers not only the care of a variety of animals, but also an opportunity for visitors to experience a greater appreciation of the value and diversity of our planet’s life forms. The Zoo serves as a valuable resource for more than ten counties located in the Shasta Cascade and North Coast Regions of California. Although the Zoo is small in relation to most facilities of this nature, it is the only municipal zoological gardens on the Pacific Coast between San Francisco and Portland. As such, it serves a wide and diverse population. Sequoia Park Zoo provides a facility that would otherwise not be available to more than a half million people. The Zoo’s goals include conservation, education and recreation. The Sequoia Park Zoo is proud to be one of the smallest institutions that has been accredited by the Association of American Zoos and Aquariums.

Imagine 600 different kinds of fish from the size of a child’s pinkie to as large as five feet, from as close as our own San Francisco Bay to as far away as the Amazon. Nowhere else can you see such diversity than at the California Academy of Sciences’ Steinhart Aquarium. You may see garden eels peep up out of their sand hideouts, a freshwater polka-dotted stingray soar through the water, or a pack of hungry piranhas circle in wait of mealtime. And lets not forget what else sets the Steinhart Aquarium apart — lizards scurrying on rocks, snakes coiling around branches, and alligators lounging in the swamp. If you think these are interesting sights, just imagine what the fish see. Visitors jump up and down. They make fish sounds. They throw fish-lipped kisses to the tank inhabitants. It makes you wonder who is observing who.
